We went out for Family Date Night tonight.  The plan was to go to Bollywood Bistro, a new Indian joint, and then to kid's karaoke at an ice cream parlor down the street therefrom.  Bollywood Bistro was packed -- in the Tyrolean sense, viz. they had many free tables and too many reservations.   So we wobbled down the street to the Pony Express Cafe, a mostly-takeout organic fast food place.  Yeah.  Organic fast food. Vicki had fried shrimp on french fried sweet potatoes, and birch beer.  Rhys had fried calimari on french fries ,and pear soda.  Bard had an organic quesadilla and an organic hot dog with organic sauerkraut.  It was alarmingly good.

Then, Karaoke.

Rhys and Vicki and LeDiva have been playing GameCube karaoke revolution a bunch, so Rhys knows what karaoke is about in general, but this is the first open karaoke he's been to.  It's mostly songs he doesn't know though.   The other kids singing are, oh, ages 7-12 or so.

Rhys's opening number is New York, New York.   He knows the song, but not very well.  And he does a brilliant job of it (on the 3-year-old scale): reading the words, keeping more or less in time with the creeping color changes and the music, singing into the microphone, enunciating pretty clearly.    The audience clapped wildly!

A girl only a couple years older than him came over and introduced herself and tried to strike up a conversation!  "You're such a good singer! You're cute! What's your name?"  (Singing well enough so that MOTAS come and hit on you is a key measure of victory in karaoke.) Rhys's social and flirty skills are about as good as Bard's!   He looked stunned!  He couldn't talk audibly over the music! He got ice cream on his jacket!

Then he did I got you babe, a true duet with Vicki.  That worked quite nicely too.

He had more trouble with You Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog.  But, as he says, by the third time the words came around, he got them right.

And we wobbled home at 9:00 -- insanely late! -- with a very sleepy and very happy Rhys.

Yay, family date night!
