magnets.

1:Magnets do not stick to zinc.
2:You can make a compass out of a magnet,bowl,smaller bowl.
3:A tuna can sticks to magnets.
4:The compass points to the north pole because of a magnet.
5:I learned this in a science kit

You might find that your compass works better if you float the smaller bowl in water, so that it can swing freely.

When I was in the Navy, we had a very large magnetic compass in the pilothouse, where we steered the ship from. Sometimes, we would calibrate it by adding or removing small magnets to the pedestal the compass rested on, to counteract the effects of the metal in the ship.
